Dekatrons were used as divide-by-10 counters by Burroughs and others around 1960, and had the advantage of supplying their own readout. A few hundred DC volts on the anode and a trivial 2-stage rc phase shifter makes them spin at 1/3 the power line rate. Swapping the guide pins make the direction reverse.
